Sistiana - Timavo river - grado
By dinghy through nature and history: from Sistiana to Grado
If you fancy a walk that combines the deep blue of the cliffs with the wild greenery of the lagoon, this is the perfect route.
I’ll take you on a journey to discover the stretch of coastline that runs from Sistiana to the “Isola del Sole” (Grado), passing through scenery that changes with every mile and bears witness to the power of nature in our region.
From Sistiana to the Lagoon: cruising along the high coast
We’ll set off from the crystal-clear waters of Sistiana Bay, leaving behind the white cliffs that rise sheer from the sea.
Cruising in a dinghy allows us to stay close to the coast, admiring details you’d never see from larger boats.
The manoeuvrability of my boat is ideal for enjoying the views of the coast as we head west, where the rocky landscape begins to give way to the first salt marshes and lagoon channels.

A stop at the mouth of the Timavo: where the river re-emerges from the Karst
Along the way, we’ll make a key stop: the mouth of the Timavo. It’s a magical, almost mystical place, where the river—which flows underground for kilometres through the depths of the Karst—finally comes back into the light to meet the Adriatic.
I’ll tell you the story of these waters, sacred to the ancients, showing you the mouth from a privileged vantage point. It’s the perfect moment to switch off the engine, listen to the sounds of nature and let yourself be captivated by the mystery of this river that ‘rebirths’ right before our eyes.
Heading for Grado: disembarking in the fishing town
After stopping at the Timavo, we’ll set sail for Grado. We’ll pass through the entrance to the lagoon, navigating between the traditional fishermen’s huts and the canals steeped in history. The dinghy allows for a quick disembarkation, taking you straight to the heart of this Istrian-Venetian town.
You can stroll through the narrow streets of the historic centre, visit the ancient basilicas or simply enjoy the relaxed atmosphere of Grado before setting sail again. It is a journey that delights the eyes and the spirit, taken at a leisurely pace by those who truly love the sea.
